The Swan In The Orange Skirt

Biography/Memoir

Poetry & Prose

Book cover titled 'The Swan In The Orange Skirt' by Olivia Walker, featuring a stylized illustration of swans swimming on water in shades of black, white, and gray.

This striking new poetry collection from the author of The Swan in the Orange Skirt and Medicine for a Heart confronts themes of heartbreak, mental turmoil, power dynamics, self-acceptance, nature, and connection.

In Walker’s signature evocative style, Reflections in the Dark juxtaposes vivid imagery with stunning plays on language that arouse hope and fosters empathy. In 57 poems, Walker fearlessly navigates the wounds we sustain from trauma, loneliness, grief, and mental illness.

Raw and powerful, her poems validate and defy, with the brutal honesty borne only from seeing the darker corners of human nature. Her work allows for a veil of poise to be lifted, exposing the disguised, turbulent landscapes of emotion, spirit, and psyche.

These poems are for individuals who reject toxic positivity, and commend intimate confessions. Reflections in the Dark is carefully curated for those with the fortitude to look within and face the complexities of their emotions and broken hearts.

  • “In shadow’s hush, where reflections dance,

A unbridled, dark horse will freely prance.

Amidst the birds, a misty veil doth lie,

Purple haze ascends, across the evening sky.”

  • “As I walk alone

on paved earth,

the air conditioners

spit on me

like the wet mouth

of a black horse.

The sun falls fast,...”

Medicine for a Heart

Poetry Anthology

Black book cover with a red heart-shaped object containing pills and capsules, and white skeletal ribcage illustration in the background. Title reads 'Medicine for a Heart,' author Olivia Walker.
She has the power (or curse) to travel back in time, within her mind. She can place herself into her old body and take on or acquire former versions of herself. She can time travel into her past mindsets, personalities, and dressing styles, but she wants to escape. She feels as though nothing is real, nothing is right. The people around her say she is remarkable for getting through it, for her accomplishments. She was a baby bird and a child who wanted to be a beautiful woman, but now she wants to go back.
She was a stone that got washed away by her mind’s ocean.

Medicine for a Heart: These poems were written to embolden, invigorate, and hearten. This fresh, raw, and honest poetry collection invites you to step inside the human heart: beating, alive, vulnerable, broken, healed, on the verge of sudden death, and ultimately, loved. Olivia Walker's poems are culled from a million sharp fragments, one slicing at the imagination, another soothing the soul, and all coming together to transcend the exterior and interior of skin and bones. The topics delve into OCD, anxiety and mental health, sexual assault, as well as healing, empowerment, strength, and resilience. Walker's collection is independent therapy. It is medicine for a heart.
